So over the next 2 weeks, I will be looking at sites and will be making a choice by Jan. 1.

I will be updating the site a bit, mainly the site fees and starting the events listings as well as notifying merchants.

4th of July Party

Well it's that time of year again.

This is an open invitation to everyone to attend my annual 4th of July party. There is space for anyone wanting to camp rather than drive home, but it is limited. So please contact me asap if you are wanting to camp. Fred will be in attendance.

It is a potluck. We will have soda, chips, and a grill for use should anyone want to cook meat.

If you haven't been in past years, I live in a cult-de-sac and most of my neighbors goto Washington and bring back fireworks. Fred also tends to make things interesting.

Revel Update

As much as I hate to write this posting, I see that I really don't have a choice.

It has me a great deal of thinking and because of the recession, I am calling off the Revel for this year.

I am unwilling to charge people such a large gate fee, when I know so many are struggling to get by. And because of the costs, I would not be able to lower the fee and be able to break even. As it is, we took a loss on last year's Revel.

But have no fear, the Blackthorne Revel will be back in 2010!

The Munchkin theme will be carried over into 2010. More time to make sure your "Knee-pads of Allure" are ready!

I am also taking the eventing season off. I will be day-tripping some of the local events.

Revel Update and Needs...

It seems some of my staff will be unable to attend or help out this
year, so there are a couple voids that need to be filled.

Firstly, we need a Merchant Crat. I would prefer someone who has had
experience doing this but I am willing to give someone a chance to try
their hand at it.

Secondly, we need someone to handle our "Brute Squad", aka volunteers
and unloaders. Basically these people help merchants and other get
their cars and trailers unload.

Thirdly, we need a head Constab. Again, I would prefer someone who has
had experience doing this but I am willing to give someone a chance to
try their hand at it.

Lastly, it would be nice to have a Chirurgeon.

The date is still up in the and I will have an answer by the end of
the month. I will post as soon as I know.

I am nearly done with the website and will be posting it soon.

All corset supplies are no longer going to be stocked here - once they're gone, they're gone! This is one of the few places that I have found that sells metal stays, both 1/2 inch and 1/4 inch, and both straight and spiral steel - and both types are coated to prevent rusting. They also sold hoop skirt supplies...

You can get 15% off all this January, but again, once the corset supplies are gone, they're gone for good.

Revel Site for 2009

Because of the problems last year, we are making a change in sites.

In 2009, the Revel will be held at Horning's Hideout.

We will not have the whole park, just part of it. Fire pits and such will depend on the fire danger levels.

The date is up in the air right now because we are waiting on the other group who have a concert the same general weekend. The Revel will be either the 14-17 or 21-24.

We will let everyone know as soon as we know.

I am in talks with Steve Jackson for use of Munchkin card on the website, so it will be after the first of the year before there is anything real on the website.

I will post a note when the new site is up.

This year we WILL have online pre-reg payment option!!

Crescent and Shamrock in disguise!

We are performing tomorrow evening at Marino Adriatic Cafe.
The band is actually Al-Arwah, but most of Crescent and Shamrock also plays in Al-Arwah.

This is a middle eastern band that plays for belly dancers.

The lowdown:
What: Al-Arwah performance for belly dancers in a nice European style cafe.
Where: Marino Adriatic Cafe 4129 SE Division, Portland (Near SE 41st and Division)
When: Friday, Aug 8, 8pm
Details: No cover. Lovely dancers and good live music. Best Turkish Coffee in town!

Fire Dancing at the Revel

We seem to have an issue.

The paperwork I filed back in March, has gone missing. When I went in on Monday to check on if they had gotten the insurance paperwork that was mailed to them in April, they couldn't find it. Needless to say, I wasn't too happy.

I have spent the last 2 days getting new copies of stuff to the park and from my insurance agent.

But because of all this, we have to make a change. At this point, there will be no fire dancing at the Revel. This makes me very unhappy but until I can talk to the "Head Boss", this is what the park is telling me.

They're basic objection is to anything with an open flame. Which also means no tiki torches or unhoused candles, which is normal for us.

We are however is allowed fire pits with proper fire safety equipment. (ie 5 gallon bucket of water or a fire extinguisher)

If anything changes, I will let you all know.

Period breastfeeding garb - a question...

Hi! I've been looking online for a few days now to find information and patterns for breast-feeding friendly garb. I've found some, but have found that no one seems to have either patterns or a merchant who would sell them.

SO - I've been making alterations of my own to garb, and at the last event, I got LOTS of comments from women who wanted to know where I'd gotten them... Now, I am asking the following question to those who may be interested:

If either easy-to-use patterns or pre-sewn garments were available for purchase, that were nursing-friendly, would you be interested in purchasing them?

Depending on the response, I'm seriously considering making both and offering them for sale through the SCA...

To stem the tide of hips... (x-posted)

Hi! This is going to sound really funny, and in some ways it is… Of course, if you are in MY situation, it’s not quite so funny… At least, not to me.

See, it’s like this – I’m pregnant (I know, big duh). The issue now is clothing. I now officially have 2 pairs of pants that will be relegated to the back of the closet until after the baby is born (and then hopefully I’ll be able to wear them again – if the goddess is kind to me).

I also have NO clothing to fit into at this point besides to pairs of crop stretch pants, which will only work as long as the weather is good – and I have no skirts or dresses that will fit, either.

The issue? My hips. Not my waist, not my legs… just my hips and butt. If it was the waist, I could simply pull out the darts on the pants – but no, it’s the hips – no way to widen them.

Also, I have no fabric to MAKE new clothes. While I have stuff that’s been sitting for a while for projects, they’re all already cut – so, nothing usable to make clothing with. So – I’m asking, BEGGING even – if you have 3-4 yards of fairly good-quality solid fabric, OR if you have pregnancy slacks in my size, please email me… I really need to have some help here, as I work in an office environment – I can’t wear stretch crop athletic pants all the time…

The dates for next year are August 15th - 18th 2008.

It will be a 4 day event which will mean a bit of a hike, but you can save money by pre-reg.

So I had a great time at the Revel, and thank YOU, Mana, for not getting on my case about "unofficial" vending. Next year I will vend officially, with ALL of my (mostly) handcrafted, exquisite items. And if I was slobbering drunk at the Tablero tournament, well .... when I'm rearranging the inside of my head with liqour, I am a hazard only to myself, as some can attest ... YAAAAARRRRRG! A huge THANK YOU to all the organizers and "-crats" who made this fun fun bigbigbig party happen! Can't wait til next year. I will tell all my friends, few though they are.

Final Numbers

Well the final numbers are in and we had 130 attend this year. Thank you to everyone who made it and I hope you'll tell all your friends.

Next year we are moving to the 3rd weekend in August and adding an extra day. Unfortunately that means a hike in gate fees.

Well will try to keep cost as low as possible and if you Pre-Reg, you can save even more money.

A Young Pirates Death

Travis DuBois Age 7 A.K.A. trav died friday at 1 am
Trav was one of the greatest inspritations in my life..he struggled all through his life and one of his dreams was to be a Rapier fighter and Pirate
Trav was disabled and has had many medical problems through-out his life.
He Was supposed to come to Sea Dog Nights this year and be the Honorary Asst Marshal In Charge....
I have been Talking with the other staff members of Sea Dogs about Re-Naming the Tourney The Travis Dubois Memorial Sea Dog Tournament

but why is the Revel scheduled RIGHT ON THE HEELS of Seadogs? Our crew has nearly 35 people going to SeaDogs and probably less than 10 to the Revel, simply because of money issues. Is there any chance next year you could move it back a few weeks so our bank accounts have a chance to recuperate?

I understand a lot (read, about 70%) of the people live down there in Oregon, but there are a ton of us here in Washington that love to do these events...and a week between events just isn't enough for us.

Please don't crucify/keelhaul/make me eat tofu...just a thought.

Lost Flag - (posted several places)

Greetings I am the Dread Pirate Kitten (as most of you know)

At seadog my flag was stolen (as expected at a pirate event) - it is black with a kitten skull and a flogger and crop crossed underneath in silver and edged in purple.

What wasn't expect is for it not to be returned and for no one to seemingly know what happened to it.

I have heard some rumors of people possibly taking it and destroying it/throwing it away and I certainly hope that is not true. Money and Time went into making it.. and I hope that maybe if I put the word out - someone will come across and let me know that it is safe.

If you hear anything about it - a reward will be granted for it's safe return.

Canceling this year.

As much as I hate to do this, I am forced to cancel the Revel this year.

The rather large lack of funds, the remoteness of the site, not being able to have merchants and the rising gas prices were the main factors in my decision.

The Revel will be back next year at McIver!!!!!

A Plea from my Dear Honey...

You see, he's the troupe leader of an amazingly wonderful fire-dancing group called Fire and Steel. Over the past 3 years, he's gotten TONS of video capture, and only recently have we gotten the computer upgraded enough to transfer the video over to the computer to place onto a DVD for sale to help promote them. Unfortunately, shite happened last night... Here's what's going on in his words:

"Recently, due to wear and tear, our camcorder, a Sony Hi8 Handycam, went belly-up. If you have upgraded from this format and are looking to sell or donate your old one, contact me off-list. I can't afford much, But I'll see what else I can barter. What I'm looking for is preferrably one with nightshot, USB compatible. The USB compatibility is the main thing I need, as we are FINALLY getting our footage (3 years worth) transferred to computer, and are ramping up to FINALLY get a DVD put out. Even if you are not looking to sell, I do need to borrow one, as I am in the middle of getting the footage from the Gathering transferred to our computer. Since the old camera is so screwed up it won't give me back my tape (thankfully, NOT from an event, just some firejam stuff) it goes without saying that it's useless for the task. So if you have one to lend for a couple weeks, I'd be grateful for that as well. Hope to hear from someone--anyone.

They are also gathering monetary donations to purchase said items. So far, the troupe has gathered over $260 in donations, in the course of a 3-day camp-out with a non-sanctioned SCA group. They're hoping that each event they end up going to will yield as much, if not more, so these kids have a great holiday.

While I still have to go before the county comission to get clearance for Merchants Row, the park manager I spoke with doesn't forsee any issues that would make them deny my request.

Tentative Site

It looks like we have a site.

The park is called Hudson-Parcher, just north of Rainer. When I spoke to the manager of the park, she didn't see any problem with us hold the Revel there this year.

We have a problem

Due to someone at the McIver State park office being unable to write down a phone # clearly, one of the shelter areas has been resevered by someone else for the 5th of August.

The next available weekend for the 3 areas we want is August 25th-27th, which is the same weekend as Long & Short of It.

After that, the next weekend is the Labor day weekend, Sept 1st-3rd.

I'm unsure of what to do now, which is why I want your input.

Shall we just shuffle the date or find another park to have it in?

The Revel

As the eventing season is about to start, it's time for us to look forward to the Revel.

Okay, I'm kinda sick and too lazy to change this to pirate speak, but please know that I'm capable and enthusiastic re pirate goodness... errr... baddness as the case may be. Anywho I would like those of you in the Society, especially of a Piratical Bent persona-wise w/in the society, as to what personas/time frames work best within the society.... if there truly aren't any I guess we'll just make seperate ones cause I love pirates/gypsies enough to have them be our alt personalities at SCA events.... when no one's lookin'. <eg>

I am curious as to the current fashion of such. As I recall it was all things celtic and unpronouncable, and Scottish at 3yc. Around 1990 it seems the fashion was either Irish(of all periods) or late Rennasaince French. Which way do the winds blow these days?

I would love to know what you think are the top 3. Not neccisarily world wide but at least An Tir-wise. And of course a comparison would be most welcome.

Site Update and Suggestions

I just updated the Revel website.

At this time I would like to ask for suggestions, comments and ideas about last year's Revel and take ones for next year's. Good or bad, I'm willing to listen to anything.

I do have port-a-biffs on the list. :-)

One thing that everyone can do is Pre-Reg. It helps with the cost of things like port-a-biffs, dumpsters, printing cost and gets you better site tokens. :-D

I would also like to ask for ideas for games, activities and for volunteers.

For all of you with "piratitude", I thought you might like to know that Sept. 19th is international "Talk like a Pirate Day". This holiday was begun about 3 or 4 years ago by two of our local buddies from Albany, Ol' Chumbucket and Capn. Slappy, authors of "Well, Blow Me Down" and another new book on "piratitude". So, come Sept. 19th, all pirates and wannabes remember to talk like a pirate and party like one if you can. ;)

I finished the site flyers tonight and I am printing them tomorrow. Site tokens are done, so we will folding site flyers on thrusday night after we finish marking off the disc golf lanes.

General update and some begging

OKay so...

My stress level is skyhigh, so please forgive me if none of this makes any sense.

It seems I have found a good job with a man who is very wealthy and pretty damned powerful in the Portland area, and it's come to his suspicion that many of his employees are jerking him around, not doing their jobs, taking 3+ hour lunches, etc, and he's perpetually swamped and frankly overwhelmed when he's got 20+ employees, including 2 secretaries and a receptionist, who should be dealing with this shit. I have a strong suspicion that when he gets back, I'll be an office manager.

The PROBLEM is that he had to leave for Mexico, Mexico City to be exact, to check in on a lab he is building for a doc who has found a cancer cure, and who is running scared from the FDA. He isn't getting back til the 9th. Thing is, I spent all of last week working with him, and he's so overwhelmed with work, he kinda forgot to get me on payroll before he left =(

So um... I'm not going to be going ANYWHERE as far as camping stuff is concerned unless I can maybe borrow some camping gear from folks? I have yet to be able to work on my umbrella tent. Kinda need, ya know, money. My ex just paid my June rent for me =/

3 & a half months

Where has the time gone?

It tis time to start making the site token for the event. I have made a change to wait the site tokens are gonna be. With the help of Sarrin and her wonderful hubby, they have collect a vast amount of discs.

This weekend I am going to go find a stamper for the metal discs that will be adult site tokens. Each will have holes drill in them and stamped with a rose.

The children will have plastic gold coins that have holes punch in them.

All will be on ribbons. The 21+ crowd will have a different colored ribbon than those 18-20. Anyone under 17 with be on rainbow ribbon.

If anyone is interested in helping us put together this mass of site tokens, please let me know.

Raiding at the Revel

What would a pirate event be without Raiding?

I have decided to allow raiding at the Revel with a few conditions.

1. You must sign up for Raiding. Once you have signed up, you will get a Raiding Flag for your encampment. These will be clearly marked for raiding so there will be no confusion. There will also be flags marked for children's raiding as well.

2. All raiding happens from Dawn to Dusk. Anyone caught raiding after dark will be disqualfied.

3. The Raiding Flag must be kept outdoors. Hiding the flag in a tent or carrying it outside of your encampment is not allowed, unless your the one doing the raiding.

4. When raiding, only the flags given out will be the only thing you can take from the encampments. Anyone taking anything other than the Raiding Flags will be turned over to Constab.

5. If you get caught raiding, your captures have the right to ransom you back to your encapment for a price. In the event of a successful raid, the ransom can be for the flag. In the event of an unsuccessful raid, the ransom for anyone over 21 can be a 6-pack but this is just an suggestion.

6. There will be 1(one) Gold flag hidden somewhere in the site. It is worth 10 flags. Anyone finding and return this flag to the Blackthorne Hearth(ie my hearth) of the McCready encampment will be awarded Blackthorne Status for the Event.

7. Above all, Have Fun!!!
